In today's financial world, financial institutions act as guarantors of transactions. This gives these institutions immense power because your money flows through them. Plus billions of people around the world can't even access a bank account. </p><p>In DeFi, a smart contract replaces the financial institution in the transaction. A smart contract is a type of Ethereum account that can hold funds and can send/ refund them based on certain conditions. Users of the system also ensure that the system can work. These rates can be significantly higher than traditional rates on Wall Street.</p><p><strong>Transparent</strong> - Anyone involved can see all transactions (private companies rarely offer this level of transparency).</p><h2>Disadvantages of DeFi</h2><p>The <strong>overwhelming transaction rates</strong> on the chains such as Ethereum blockchain mean that any fee in that chain will be more expensive. </p><p>Depending on which dapp and how you use your investment may experience <strong>high volatility</strong>.
