Any DAO with token-based voting has to deal with the same fundamental problem: tokens that are traded on exchanges make it easy to buy and sell votes. This has led to opportunistic voting attacks, in which a sufficient number of tokens were purchased specifically for voting and then rapidly sold. DAO governance has been seeking a strategy to make token holders' actions more long-term-oriented. One new strategy is to give holders more votes the longer their tokens are frozen and to require them to place their tokens in escrow before they may vote.<h2>Introduce to veToken</h2>Vote Escrow is a method where tokens are locked for predetermined time periods.Votes have a weight based on time, thus users are investing in the future of the project and have voting power depending on their veToken holding.Curve Finance invented the veToken. The primary application of Curve is as a very effective trading engine that reduces stable coin swap slippage. The decentralized exchange has now reached DeFi paradise as a result of this. Additionally, Curve has a proprietary token called $CRV, which has a somewhat special use case and is given out as a reward to depositors of its liquidity pools. Owners of $CRV can choose which pool they should direct emissions to by casting a vote. Of course, higher yield equates to higher emissions, and we all know that DeFi is flush with mercenary capital. A tighter peg and less slippage are produced by increased liquidity, which is attracted by higher yield. a triple-win. CRV emissions, liquidity, and slippage all increase.Curve launched veCRV, which is awarded in proportion to how long you locked up your tokens, in an effort to "align token holders' interests with the long-term success of the project." If you lock your tokens for a maximum of four years, you can increase your earnings by up to 2.5 times. Locking away your tokens gives you greater rewards in addition to voting power. However, veCRV cannot be moved.A protocol or stablecoin issuer is now probably choosing to buy and lock CRV for the entire four years if they wish to manage CRV emissions. If that sounds alluring, Convex Finance built exactly that.Convex gives a 50% yield on your deposited CRV. That offers are more than twice as much as Curve's. Additionally, the cvxCRV you receive is liquid and can be used for additional DeFi activities. You might wonder, "How is that possible? That is the reason why Convex can not give you back your CRV. When you give Convex your CRV, it becomes their property.By operating this plan, Convex quickly holds a lot of CRV and Curve voting power. This means they are in control of CRV emissions.So do other protocols have to buy more CRV in order to take the captain position of Convex? Well, they are not likely to be able to beat Convex since it has become too big. However, they do not have to beat Convex anyway. Instead of purchasing CRV in order to affect emissions, they began purchasing CVX in order to affect what Convex did on Curve and on Convex.This shows how brilliant Convex was. With a smart move, they are in control of CRV emissions and have their token boosted. We also addressed Convex's token, CVX. Convex allows its token holders to vote on how to use their CRV, but only those who have locked up their CVX to obtain vlCVX (vote-locked CVX) are eligible to do so. Do not be misled by the letter "l," as this is another veToken. Every CVX controls roughly six CRV, making CVX holdings, as claimed, an effective tool to drive Curve yields.For locking up CVX, Convex offers very low yields, often between 2% and 3%. The lock period, however, is only 16 weeks + 7 days, or around 5 months.<h3>Redacted Cartel jumped in</h3>This time it is easier to predict. If we have a Curve-Convex relationship then why don’t we have a Convex-(another protocol) relationship in which that protocol acts like Convex in Curve-Convex relationship? As many people can see the opportunity, a couple of astute programmers believed that by collecting CVX liquidity and yields, they could improve the efficiency of voting on Convex. Eventually, this developed into [Redacted] Cartel, which swiftly became a DeFi giant.[Redacted] provided a rebasing approach like Olympus with an absurdly large yield that was paid out in BTRFLY tokens. The largest BTRFLY yields can be obtained by bonding CRV or CVX, which together account for over 70% of their present treasury. As [Redacted] quickly grew in strength, it was able to control a sizable percentage of Curve yields.<h3>Bribing entities&nbsp;</h3>Holders of CVX are paid by protocols to cast their votes. This is known as bribery. They do so because paying off the holders is less expensive than purchasing CVX on their own. The amount of incentives that a protocol must provide to persuade CVX holders will vary depending on the level of competition. Per CVX vote, they often fall between $0.40 and $0.80. At the time of writing, August 8, 2022, one CVX costs $7, making bribery an excellent strategy to increase the number of votes for your poolsConvex holders also benefit. They can earn 58% more in bribes than the 3% they would have made from locking. However, voting is time-consuming and costs money.Then we have Votium. Instead of voting on weekly allocations personally, CVX holders can simply delegate to Votium, who will optimize rewards on your behalf. Because protocols pay bribes in their native currencies, users may end up with a slew of insignificant prizes that are more expensive to obtain than they are worth. The expenses for claiming them are frequently greater than the sums. Don't worry, there is another aggregator. So that’s the Curve war.<h2>The downsides of veToken</h2>So far, we've seen how veTokens stimulate demand and how entire ecosystems may be built on top of these illiquid, non-transferable tokens. But what about the drawbacks?For starters, the long token lock periods are prohibitively expensive. The more funds you have, the easier it is to lock in a portion of your portfolio for the longest possible period of time. And only those who stay the longest get the full benefits.This enables whales to consolidate their influence. Richer users and protocols typically require less liquidity. Protocols with big treasuries that can execute significant deposits as market makers can make it difficult for smaller protocols, particularly individual investors, to gain any sway.When tokens are locked and illiquid, there is a high risk of rug-pull, hack, and fraud.&nbsp; Locking down a protocol with a huge TVL for four years provides hackers plenty of time and incentive to uncover holes to attack.Of course, hacks and rug-pulls occur on protocols without voted escrow as well, but the extended lock-up periods end up making this extremely uncomfortable because you can't withdraw your assets even if a weakness is detected and you'd like to withdraw as a precaution. Many crypto ventures fail to last four years, and if customers are unable to withdraw their assets, they will be brought down with them.<h2>Do veTokens bring holders benefit in long term?</h2>Returning to Curve and Convex, these two are part of the longest-running veToken experiment. We've shown how veTokens can power an entire economy of aggregator and bribery mechanisms. We've also seen that following a brief price increase, the value of these tokens fell precipitously.This comes as no surprise. Although veTokens provide incentives to lock up tokens, continual CRV emissions on a growing TVL result in a steadily increasing supply. And, rather than locking up CRV gains, some users will prefer to exchange them for more useful tokens or stablecoins. Platypus is a stablecoin savings protocol that allows users to stake USDT, USDC, and DAI in exchange for PTP rewards. You can obtain vePTP by locking PTP, which is neither transferrable nor tradable. Every hour, one staked PTP generates 0.014 vePTP, and the more vePTP you have, the higher the dividend on your deposit. This makes them hard to consider as part of a portfolio in the long run. CRV and CVX perform as yield-emitted tokens. However, yield in a token with no value other than the power to direct more yield has a low fundamental value. This provides incentives to leave while the project is still sustaining and boosts selling pressure.ConclusionWe have learned a lot after investigating the full aspects of veToken. This brings us to a better question: What is the utility of tokens? If it is only excellent for making ve, the design is circular logic and will ultimately fail. When Curve and Convex first clashed on the internet, veTokens were spanking new.
